The Usual Suspects of Basketball

There is nothing that makes “no-shave-November” taste better than what I like to call “non-stop-November”. College basketball is rebooting, and things are already promising for the March Madness tournament, which is waiting for us in less than three months.

But if you think about it, the madness has already begun. Take a look:

The top five teams in the country are: Kentucky, Arizona, Wisconsin, Duke and Kansas.

The usual suspects.

The defending champion UConn Huskies start in 17th place on ESPN’s recent rankings and are even behind teams such as Iowa State, Texas and San Diego State. None of these teams had the kind of connections and shooting success the Huskies had with then-senior Shabazz Napier, who led his team to a title at the surprising Kentucky Wildcats.

What’s crazy about it, will you tell me? A few little things.

First, why this hatred? If you ask me, I would say that UConn deserves to be #10 or higher, if not more. Secondly, other big teams like Michigan State (#19), Ohio State (#20) and Syracuse (#23) seem to be cold.

And of all sports, one might have thought that basketball would reward notoriety, not just the name of the schools.

But if that were not enough, the fact that Kentucky remains in 1st place after the first two games should make a couple of jaws drop.

Why? They barely beat the mediocre buffalo bulls. Sure, the game ended 71-52, but at some point in the game and during most of the competition, Kentucky could not put the amount owed on a below-average Joe team.

But wait, there’s more!

Almost like one of those dummy ads we’ve all seen on TV at some point in our lives, Kentucky has given us even more chewing gum. Damn, they gave us the 2-for-1 special of the week.

None of their statistics as a team is in the TOP TEN in the standings. Here they rank (ESPN)

And you’re telling me that it’s the best team in the country? Please take glasses. And no, no pink or rainbow colors allowed.
